When I got back from Monteverde, I had exactly six days to have as many reunions and goodbyes as I could.
First, a game night with the crew of “Apertura.” I left with zero pictures but we laughed so hard we almost cried and I was reminded of all this crew meant to me, allowing to be part of something bigger than myself.
Then it was time to say goodbye to my Monteverde girls. This was so hard. We played cards in the park and walked a while before saying our emotional goodbyes. Then we got one last view of San José.

I made tamales on Saturday morning with my host family and six other guests and helpers. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun. It was a lovely way to wrap up my stay with them, where they have made me feel so welcome and cared for.

Saturday night I went with some friends to see the “Festival de las Luces” parade in downtown San José. I also got to see the impressive downtown street art one more time.

Sunday was my last day. That morning I met up with my UCR buddy and her friends, who had become my friends too, and we had a picnic in the park. It was lovely.

Before I knew it, it was 3:30am on Monday and I was heading to the airport.

Leaving San José.
Landing in snowy Kansas.
There are lots of things I’ll miss about Costa Rica. Mostly the people I met there, so many friends who were always so kind and welcoming, my host moms who made me feel at home, and coordinators who helped me navigate difficult changes. I’ll probably miss the weather, after a few weeks of below freezing temperatures. I’ll miss the weekend trips and the excitement of everything being new. I’m so glad I went on this trip, and I’m so happy to be back home again. I’ve come back with a new perspective, grateful for the comforts of speaking in my native language and driving myself around town, where I still know the roads by heart. For everyone who’s kept up with this blog, thanks for reading. It’s been a joy to share this trip with all of you.
